Vox Balaenae

CoLab @ SandBox

For artists, for community, for what’s possible.

Musikiwest’s Big Idea for the 2026 MC Gives brings together an extraordinary collaboration anchored by Vox Balaenae(Voice of the Whale) by American composer George Crumb. Written for three masked players, electric flute, electric cello, and amplified piano, this mesmerizing 20-minute work draws inspiration from recordings of humpback whale songs. But the collaboration reaches far beyond the musicians onstage. It brings together the imagination of the composer, the discoveries of researchers, the artistry of the performers, and perhaps most profoundly, the natural wonders of Monterey Bay and the whales themselves.

We offer our deepest gratitude for the gifts of our oceans; for the vital work of MBARI to understand and protect our extraordinary marine environment; for the musicians who lend their talents to bringing this magnificent music to life; and for you, our audience, whose presence completes the experience.
