Transylvanian Dance with Lucian Ban & Mat Maneri

Drawing from their acclaimed ECM Records release Transylvanian Dance pianist Lucian Ban and violist Mat Maneri reimagine through improvisation the Béla Bartók Field Recordings of folk songs from Transylvania using live performance along with video projections featuring rare archival footage, audio from Bartók’s original wax cylinder recordings, handwritten manuscripts and photographs taken by Bartók himself in his field trips. 

More than a concert, Transylvanian Dance invites audiences into Bartók's remarkable journey across the villages of Transylvania while revealing the timeless emotional power of the music he preserved.

For over fifteen years, Ban and Maneri have forged one of the most distinctive artistic partnerships in contemporary improvised music, creating a singular language where Transylvanian folk traditions, European modernism and chamber jazz converge and releasing a series of acclaimed albums for ECM and Sunnyside records with some of the most important musicians in jazz from John Surman to Louis Sclavis, from Ralph Alessi to Gerald Cleaver, Tony Malaby and many others.
