About the Event

The crown jewel of this WolganG  program is the monumental Divertimento in E flat major, K. 563, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for string trio, one of his noblest works.  Mozart himself played his favored instrument, the viola in the premier of this work in Dresden in 1789!  This work provided inspiration to Beethoven and Schubert and countless others. To open this program we present The Three Madrigals for violin and viola by Bohuslav Martinu, inspired by a performance of Mozart Duos by Lillian and Joseph Fuchs,  As Robert Matthew-Walker writes, "Here, surely, is a memoir of his roots: Bohemian-Moravian folk themes and dances, the pentatonic scale, the very instrumentation of his beloved violin and viola, the ‘sprung’ rhythms of the madrigalists which had so enchanted Martinu when he first heard The English Singers in 1923, intimate sketches of his homeland momentarily at peace and recollected from a distant convalescence."

We are thrilled to present violinist, Jessica Fellows. Jessie is currently the Assistant Principal Second Violin with the San Francisco Symphony. Prior to her appointment, she performed frequently with both the Saint Louis Symphony and the New York Philharmonic. Ms. Fellows’s recent summer festival appearances include engagements at Bravo! Vail, Lakes Area Music Festival, Rome Chamber Music Festival, Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival, Spoleto USA, and the Aspen Music Festival, where she was a fellow from 2011–16. Returning to SandBox to join the WolfganG is the assistant principal  violist of the San Francisco Symphony, Katie Kadarauch. Musikiwest's founder/artistic director and creator of SandBox, Michelle Djokic  is the cellist.

Our Musikiwest WolfganG musicians will be area classrooms in the days prior to this concert. They will present various skits through their musical collaboration that shed light on navigating the subtleties of today's complex social landscape. The music is the vehicle that opens our students' hearts and minds as we invite them to share their observations and help everyone find solutions.  Your donations to Musikiwest brings this valuable and unique program to area schools at no cost to them. THANK YOU!

A limited number of free tickets are available to first time concert goers. To claim your ticket please email sandboxsandcity@gmail.com. All youth 16/under are welcome to attend this concert with free admission when accompanied by an adult.
