The Magic, Magic Rug (Smarty's Party Redux)
Time & Location
About the Event
Magic, Magic Rug is a film designed for multiple screens to be part of a large scale immersive art exhibition with original music by Frank Zappa alum, Arthur Barrow and is the follow up to Dance of the Little Bells – the time period of these two works covers the run up to the 2016 election and ends with the 2020 aftermath– it is not a telling of the news but a surrealist reaction to the zeitgeist set in a future that rhymes with the past and is weird like now - Baer’s premise -imagination is a survival tool –
The film is a love letter to the Monterey Peninsula creative community and you will see many familiar faces. There will be a live reading at the event with special guests including violinist Cindy Wu and international opera singer Louis Lebherz – Culinary wizard Richard Oh will do a wine pairing to go with various sections of the film – intoxication is also a survival tool.
Mark D. Baer has been a Hollywood screenwriter, novelist, filmmaker, art critic, spoken word poet and a painter - He was Executive Director/Artist in Residence at the Museum of Monterey from 2011 to 2014 where he produced and directed the 100 Story Project. He and his equestrian wife, Suzanne Thomas, live in Pebble Beach. His recent work includes set design for Just Don't End up in the Pine Cone, Honey for Ballare Carmel as part of the Carmel Dance Festival in collaborations with Zurich based choreographer Ihsan Rustem and Lilian Barbieto.
