About the Event

Winter Solstice is the great stillness before the sun's strength builds and the days grow longer. Ideas and concepts go to seed and in darkness growth happens and new life begins. Our featured artist, harpist Destiny Muhammad, will offer a sonic improvised suite, Rosie Lee Tompkins: Guided By Something More Powerful- inspired by the work of Rosie Lee Tompkins. Rosie Lee Tompkins (1936-2006) is widely considered to be one of the most brilliant and inventive quilt makers of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Her reputation has grown to the point where her work is no longer considered solely within the context of quilting, but celebrated among the great American artistic achievements of our time. Destiny is joined by Seaside’s own, pianist Tammy L. Hall and drummer Leon Joyce, Jr. and Oakland resident Arturo Chico Lopez on upright bass. Poets Enid Pickett (Healdsburg Jazz’ Poet Laureate for 2021) and Devorah Major (San Francisco’s third Poet Laureate) add their voices to this rich, sonic tapestry. Musical offerings will also include Bernard Ighner’s “Everything Must Change” and Stevie Wonder’s “Love’s In Need of Love Today”. We hope that you, our audience, will contribute to this sonic Solstice experience by accepting an invitation to share your thoughts, prayers, hopes, dreams and intentions: you will be welcomed with beautiful pieces of fabric on which we invite you to write your poetry, prose, quotes, wishes, prayers or reflections. Our performers Tammy Hall and Destiny Muhammad, will then select from your offerings and in real time, create a tonality that brings to life these shared thoughts through improvised music and spoken word, with Enid Picket and Devorah Major. This tradition of African American Quilting will also be explored with music and spoken word based upon the quilting of Faith Ringgold and Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson. Your shared thoughts will then be woven together culminating in a multi cultural quilt representative of the community we have shared.

This program is made possible through a generous grant from the Arts Council for Monterey County
